Quilling

I have never done any quilling although I have a small kit that I do plan to use (maybe this year?). Who knew it could look like this? My favorite is the wreath. Lovely.

Last Minute Christmas Gift

This year several sites mentioned surprise balls. They are balls of crepe paper that the recipient unwinds to find small gifts hidden inside. I decided to try them with my family.
Shortly after I made my mom's, I found the item I had meant to put in the middle. So, I unwrapped hers to start over and even though it wasn't for me it was so fun to see the goodies fall out. The next day I was telling one of the women I work with about it when it occurred to me that I should make some for my co-workers. We weren't having a gift exchange this year, but I wanted to do something.
The plan was to just put small candies in it since this was now very last minute, but I ended up making a bracelet (sorry, no picture) for one person and some small felt pins for some others.

One co-worker had already asked me for a snowman pin and another loves ladybugs, so those were easy to come up with. These were so fun and easy to do that I know I will be making more.
Not everyone got a pin but they all got a surprise ball and they were all delighted as they began unwrapping them and saw the little treats falling out.
The hardest part of this is finding the little things that work, but as you wind the ball you see where to add the next thing and it all comes out pretty round at the end.

First Matchbox Swap

I have seen a lot of swaps for matchboxes decorated and filled with an assortment of, well, anything that will fit in one. The most popular size is 32 but there are also swaps for size 250. It took me a while to figure out that the number refers to the number of matches that would fit in the box.
It turns out you don't have to actually buy a box of matches and use them or throw them out. You can just make your own matchbo
x. So I finally signed up for a swap and made a box (size 32) out of an old Christmas card.It is filled with lots of things including a book thong and earrings. I was surprised how much I could fit in such a small box. It was fun to do and I will definitely do it again.
For this swap, we were also supposed to include an edible treat. My partner did not mention anything she likes to eat so I just added a few peppermints to the package to meet the requirements of the swap. She did, however, mention that she likes Dotee dolls very much. So this is what she is getting as her real treat.

Hope she likes her package.

This Is A Job For Chocolate

Sunday I drove my daughter to my mom's house where she lives while she goes to college. I spent the night so that I could take my mom to the hospital for an out-patient procedure that ended up taking a wee bit longer than expected.
It was supposed to take half an hour (the nurse's estimate) to an hour (my mom's estimate). After two and a half hours a nurse came out to talk to me in case I might (might?) be worried. It seems that their first plan of action had not gone well and they had switched to something else. She wasn't sure how much longer the new procedure would take.
I don't know either, but the two procedures together took a little over four hours.
The doctor said that he thought my mom would end up spending the night in the hospital because of the pain, but she wanted to go home. I don't think she would have been in less pain at the hospital and this way she got to sleep in her own bed, and eat the food she likes.
Needless to say, this situation called for chocolate. This is the recipe my mom gave me to try for her while she was mending.

Fudge Buttons
12 oz. chocolate kisses, unwrapped
1 7.5 oz jar marshmallow fluff
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 5 oz. can evaporated milk
4 tablespoons butter
Pecan halves

In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, heat the sugar, milk and butter to boiling.
Reduce heat to medium low and continue to cook for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Meanwhile, put kisses and marshmallow fluff in large, heat-proof bowl.
Pour hot sugar mixture over the kisses and marshmallow fluff. Stir until kisses are melted and everything is blended.
Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper and push a pecan half into the top before it cools. Allow to cool thoroughly.
These can be stored in an air-tight container for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

I never understand the "can be stored . . . for up to one week" stuff. Is this in case chocolate-hating aliens want to make some to have ready for their human visitors? Why would they still be there a week later? I don't get it.

Thank You

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag...."

Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Thank you to each and every one who has served and who is serving in the military. I appreciate the gifts you give us so much.

Chez Nick's Crackers with Toppings

Yesterday afternoon my 10 year old son asked me if I wanted to see a menu. This means he wants to play restaurant.
The menu is hand drawn with pencil on a folded sheet of printer paper.
On the front in a decorative border it says "Menu."
Inside the menu reads :
Breakfast
crerios: brings down heart burn, made with honey

Lunch
sandwich: choose
crackers with toppings:
Ham, chedder, ollives and Deli crisp
chees sandwich: buns with melted chees

Beverges
Milk
Orange juich
slushie
water

On the opposite side are a hand-drawn tic-tac-to (with a note to remind me that x=kiss and o=hug), and maze and two coupons. One is for 3 cents off. The other, complete with a bar code, is for a free breakfast.

Next to the crackers with toppings listed on the menu is a circle with TOP!! inside. I'm sure that means that it is the chef's recommendation so that is what I ordered. You can see what I got.

Chef Nick is an artist.

Some Things I'm Looking At

Have you seen these wonderful colored pencil sculptures by Jennifer Maestre? She strings them together using a beading technique. It will certainly give you new respect for the humble pencil stub.
I have also been seeing lots of little houses. How cute are these little ornaments by Pimp Stitch? Complete with a tutorial.
Non dairy Diary has a template for a little house appropriate for elves, birds and even teddy bears. If you click on the link you find there you can see what she has done with the templates and download those.
Nichole Heady has a pattern for a birdhouse ornament here.
Last, there is a pattern from Cheeky Magpie for flat houses for all you two-dimensional friends

Below that, starting on the left are two ATC's from PansySuz. They are for the Thread Embellished ATC swap. The green one has a tassel on it. I love tassels and I never would have thought of if. Below that is one that has and interesting embroidered motif. It will be a fun technique to play around with.
In the middle is an ATC from Sabrina in Italy. It is for the Halloween ATC swap. Very cute.
Last, on the right, are two more Halloween ATC's. These are from USS Angell, though the one on bottom, with the cat was done by Lori Otto.
Everyone included extras which I have scattered about the picture. There were also some lovely fibers, which I forgot to include in the picture. Sigh.

Which gives me an excuse to make another plastic canvas box. I used one of the designs on the orange inchie container and a bunch of scrap yarn. I like it.
The problem is that there isn't room for many more bookmarks in it so I will have to make something else in the future. Probably in plastic canvas. With more of the scrap yarn. Or maybe with some not-scrap yarn which will give me more scraps for future projects. It's the circle, the circle of crafts.

Crocheted Christmas Ornaments

These are from a pattern by Roxycraft. If you compare the bottom of the one on the far left with the next two, you will see that the middle ones have a pointer bottom. So does the one on the far right, but it is hard to see in the picture. To do that I made this change:
Round 1: ch 2; sc in 2nd chain from hook, 3 times; join with slst in first sc.
Round 2: ch 1; 2sc in each ch around; joing with slst in first sc.
Pick up pattern at its Round 2.
The three larger ornaments are for swap-bot, and are in colors from my partners' profiles. The small one is for me and is made with self-striping yarn, so no yarn changes.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Today is my mom's birthday. There is an elaborate mathematical formula for figuring her age that means she is now younger than me. In the how-old-would-you-be-if-you
-didn't-know-how-old-you-are model she is probably about 37.
Anyway, happy birthday, mom. It is especially important to wish her a happy birthday this year because she is having her kidney's pounded with sound waves to break up some stones today. That whole cake and conical hat and friends model of celebrating is just so last year, for those of you who, like me, are out of the loop.
Since she is not going the traditional route this year, I thought she might enjoy looking at some cool things I have been looking at this last week.
Mimi Kirchner has some wonderful pincushions here and here.
There are amazing paper sculptures here.
And because platelets seem to be important in the lives of my mom, who donates them, and my daughter, who went through a little episode when she was 3 where her body decided it did not need platelets cluttering things up (her body was wrong), I thought they would both enjoy seeing these happy little platelets (of love). I know they look like little suns, but they are platelets.
One last thing. You can find the pattern for the Matryoshka dolls here.

Matryoshka Dolls All in a Row

And yes, I could have made another one but he needs a family even if he is a tight squeeze.

Matryoshka Dolls Nested

This is a set of dolls I did for yet another swap on swap-bot. It is hard to tell in the picture but the mother doll is purple and the baby is dark blue. The person these are for said she likes jewel tones of blue, green, red and purple. I don't have jewel-toned green felt so this is what she got. After I embroidered the outlines on the mom's facial features I filled them in with colored pencil. I also gave the mom and little girl colored pencil roses for their cheeks. The flowers on the mom's and little girl's babushkas are hand embroidered.

Making Up Your Mind Is Over-Rated

Inchie Container
Originally uploaded by joanieponytail57
I signed up for the Inchie Container swap and had in mind to make the container out of plastic canvas because I really like to make boxes out of plastic canvas. Of course, if it turned out the partner I was assigned said something in her profile that made me think she would hate that, I would do something else. Turns out my partner did not say that -- that will teach her -- and that her favorite color is orange, so I made her this container with all sorts of (almost) one-inch motifs in mostly oranges.
Ah, but the day partners were assigned my copy of Crochet Today came in the mail and it had these cute baskets in three different sizes. I also like to crochet little containers. Really? Now I have to choose? Really? I hate that.
So she is getting both. So there. Hah!

It took him three crafting sessions to finish this and the only reason he did is that I promised to put a picture of it here if he did. Once he figured out how the process actually worked he was over it.

Halloween ATC

While I was making them, my husband, who was doing some cleaning/organizing, brought in a box that had something called the Love and Money Loom set inside. My sister-in-law had given it to me years ago around the time I got married.
Hmmm, I'm making ATC's for a halloween swap. I have way too much thrifted orange yarn that I'm not sure how I will ever use up. And I have a loom set easily available. What to do. What to do.
Turns out both of my partners won't have to be worrying about that bubbling hot cauldron ruining the finish on whatever it is you put burning hot cauldrons on.

I Got Mail

Look at all the lovely things that came in the mail for me this week. These are all the result of Swap-bot swaps.

Starting on the left, from Barbara, a box with a cherry blossoms and bamboo design for the Inchies Container swap. The box was filled with all sorts of goodies like buttons and dried flowers and the envelope of embellishments you can see directly below the box in the picture.

In the middle, from kylanicole, are inchies from the Alphabet Inchies 1-2-3 #2 swap. These are the letters J-R and are done in watercolor. For a really good picture of them, see her website. My favorite is the rocket, but they are all so lovely, I think I will frame them. Above the inchies are some stickers she hand stamped for me. I suspect, but do not know, that she made the stamp, too.

Below the inchies is a beautiful ATC from mergs in Australia. You will have to see it in person to appreciate how lovely it is. Wow. It is for the Thread Embellished ATC swap.

Finally, on the right, are two (TWO !) zines from Pickle who lives in Canada. I had never seen an actual zine until I joined the Quote Zine swap and made my own. These are the first I have received from someone else. Both of them are very interesting and I will use some of her same techniques next time I make a zine. One of the zines is the quote zine and the other is about incorporating art in your life. She also sent me the picture behind the zines that she silkscreened herself.

Thanks to all of my wonderful swap partners. Hooray!

Test Your Color IQ

OK, I thought this was an interesting little test. You have to arrange the colors in the correct order. After you get your initial score they will show you how you compare to others in your age range and sex.

Student of the Month

Today my son received a student of the month award. The character attributes for this month are friendship and loyalty. Each class picks two students who best demonstrated those attributes. His dad and I were very pleased and proud. He was too. Afterwards, the students got to take their family members to the multipurpose room for cookies and milk or coffee. Very nice.

This is a picture of my son and husband enjoying their cookies. The funny thing is Nick wore a t-shirt from his old school instead of from this school. Oh well. At least the principal of this school was the principal of the old school and a lot of the teachers from that school also moved to this new one.

My Favorite Dentist

I got to go to the dentist today. Just a check-up, though I will be back Friday for a crown prep. When the hygienist was doing her work I could tell the probe stuck a bit on of the teeth. I thought it was on an existing crown -- yikes! -- but it turned out to be the tooth with the big, ugly amalgam filling in front of it. The filling is at least 25 years old and while I don't enjoy dental work, I am vain enough to be glad to see that one be replaced with something natural looking.
This dentist is further away than I like driving when there are a lot of dentists between him and our home, but I am so happy with him and the work he has done. My teeth feel better and look better (ah, vanity) and I know my mouth is healthier since I started going there. He doesn't try to sell you extra services. Everyone at his office is so nice.
I used to be a nervous wreck when I went to the dentist and would start getting nervous about a week ahead of time. No more. God bless Dr. B.

Buttons and Blocks

Roses W/ Thread ATC's

When I signed up for the Thread Embellished ATC swap on swap-bot I had in mind to do the woven blocks. Before I started it I saw these roses in an embroidery book from the library. My first thoughts were 1) those are couched with thread and 2) I have that yarn. So, I had to make them. Of course, the thread used to couch the yarn really isn't much of an embellishment so I added the swirls so these would qualifiy. These are just a bonus for the swap since I still sent the woven ones.

Alphabet Inchies J-R

Today I sent out these inchies for a swap-bot swap. For this swap I needed to make nine inchies, one each for the letters J-R.
J is jewels on a foil background saved from an envelope lining.
K is a pieced-paper kite with a drawn tail.
L is card stock leaves with embroidered stems.
M is the moon over a mountain. Card stock and colored pencil.
N is a necklace.
O is oranges in a bowl. Colored pencil.
P is a poem. Actual poem. My mom taught is to me when I was little.
Q is for quilt. This is the pinwheel pattern.
R is for rose. The rose itself is made with nail polish.

Quote Zine

There are other ways of doing this but I thought I would use the method referenced in the swap description, which involves laying out the images on one side of a single sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" paper, making copies and folding and making one small cut in the middle.

The zine is hand-lettered and the images are all my own. After I printed them I hand-colored them with colored pencil.

My mom asked for one yesterday so I sent hers out today.

I Let Them Cut Me Open. . .

so that I could wish my dear daughter a Happy Birthday today. "I let them cut me open" is the phrase I use to try to make her feel guilty about all I have done for her. She laughs because I first told her how happy I was when they said I would be having a C-section.

Regardless of how she came to be here, I thank God that she is my daughter. Proof that God is good.

First Post - Original Title, Sign of Things to Come

I promised I would do this today, so even though I have been up most of the night with a sick boy, to the doctor and running around to three pharmacies, I am keeping this promise. Too easy to make another excuse and I want to do this.

The name of the blog comes from one of my grandma's nicknames for me. It was the nickname of a friend of hers when they were little. She liked the name enough to have it stick in her head for 30+ years until I was born. I hope it will stick in your head, too.

The image at the top of this post is of a hot pad I made using No. 10 crochet cotton. I just wanted to have something fun to look at on my very first post.
